Mocka Luna Cube Storage Wall Assembly Instructions

Summary: My units fit within a 2.7m x 2.7m room on polished wooden floors. The storage wall is arranged 2 units wide (horizontal pairs) and 3 units high (a stack). To assist with planning: Each assembled unit measures: 789mm (H) x 1282mm (W) x 390mm (D) The complete storage wall including negative details measures: 2577mm (H) x 2577 (W) x 390mm (D) The storage wall sits on a plinth (essential a sturdy wooden box that can support the weight of the units when loaded and is fixed to the floor or skirting so won’t move and whose top is level) made from 18mm melamine painted white that is 200mm high. Incidentally this is 50mm higher than my timber skirting boards which also gives me approximately 150mm clearance at the ceiling (enough to get my hand above the unit holding a stubby screw driver to secure the at the top to the wall) and I have 70mm gaps on each side from the side walls. The bottom units have a timber spigot matched to a slot in the carcass so when assembled together than cannot move independently. Most of the effort in making the wall will go into building the plinth and assembling the Mocka units, if you have level floors and don’t want to have the storage wall raised off the floor, you’ll save hours and some money on materials. For this exercise, I won’t go into making the plinth but will talk through a straight forward assembly sitting directly on the floor. Between each of the units I have maintained a 3mm negative detail. Each horizontal pair of units is dowelled on the sides near the top to help stability and each unit in the stack is dowelled on the top/bottom at the corners to ensure each unit in the stack cannot move independently of the one above or below. The two stacks are connected to the wall at the ceiling by fitting a 2m wide 50x50x3mm aluminium angle to the wall fixed at the studs and into the top of the units. I’ve used 14g x 40mm hex head tek screws to fix to the wall at the studs and 10g x 12mm stainless steel self-tapping pan head screws at 300mm centres to fix to the top of the units, this way I can avoid countersinking the aluminium angle as I have to predrill it because it can’t be done in place. This angle effectively ties the whole thing together and makes the unit behave as one piece and provide safe restraint to the wall. Material you will need: Dowels x 22 + drill bit to suit 1.2mm or 1.6mm or 2mm thick stainless steel washers depending on what is available (internal diameter big enough to just slip them over the dowels) x 44 of the same thickness if you are wanting the negative detail. 2m of 50x50x3mm mill finish aluminium angle. This might need to be 50x75mm if your walls are out of plumb or your skirting boards push the unit out further from the wall. 500mm of 50x50x3mm (buy a metre and cut it down if need be) mill finish aluminium angle (needed to make a template for the dowels) you actually only need a piece the same width as the units 14g x 40mm (minimum) hex head tek screws (qty will depend on the number of studs) 10g x 12mm (minimum, don’t go longer than 18mm) stainless steel pan head self-tapping screws (pozi or phillips head), you’ll need at least half a dozen. 3mm mdf strips or similar hard durable material to use as shims/packers for out of level floors. Tools you will need: Tape measure Pencil A longish spirit level Drop saw with an aluminium blade or a hacksaw with a nonferrous metal blade suitable for aluminium 6mm drill bit 5mm drill bit Drill bit to match dowels. Socket for tek screws Bit for 10g screws Ezy-grip clamp (optional) Instructions: Step 1: Assemble one unit, I save the white dots till last so I can tweak the connecting nuts again if need be and so I don’t damage the dots. TIP1: If you’ve never assembled these units before make sure when tightening up the connecting nuts that they go at least 1/3 of the way round, but ideally as close to a ½ turn…clean the wooden swarf (debris from drilling the hole) from the hole (blow it out), use the biggest screw driver you can get to fit as the better the fit the greater the torque and the easier they are to tighten. I recommend you wear some gloves to save your hands as there are a lot of these to tighten and as your hands tire or get a little sweaty you won’t be able to get them as tight as you need. Step 2: Using a tape measure, mark out the floor to match the size of the units essentially creating an outline on the floor. I used pencil marks on the skirting to match the back of the units and a couple on the floor to match the other corners. Step 3: Use the marks as reference points so you can check the location of fixtures like power points and light switches. Adjust the marks/unit location to avoid clashes if possible. Now mark the centre of the units and run a plumb pencil mark all the way up the wall until it’s a 100mm above the top of the units when assembled. Step 4: Check the walls for plumb with a spirit level, make sure you check across various points of your wall, not just the ends. If your wall leans into your room at the ceiling you will need to move the base out by the same distance as the lean to ensure the units sit plumb. Once you’ve adjusted your outline consider how the units sit parallel to visible markers like wooden floors and adjust your base position to get the best aesthetic look. Step 5: Check the floor for level in both directions, if the floor isn’t level (a few mm won’t matter) you may want to obtain some 3mm mdf strips or similar hard durable material to use as shims/packers under the units so they sit stable on the floor. Step 6: Check your walls for the stud locations (plenty of YouTube videos to show you how to do this) marking them out with a pencil. Step 7: Pick up your materials from your hardware store now that you know if you need a 50x75 or 50x50 aluminium angle, whether you need materials for packing the units depending on floor levels and how many fixings you need into the studs. Step 8: Find the middle of your 2m angle, mark it clearly then the middle of your storage wall, line them up and mark out the location of your studs you identified at Step 6 on the aluminium. Using a 6mm drill bit, drill holes that match the stud marks in roughly the middle of the 50mm up-stand leg. Step 9: On the opposite leg of the aluminium angle, from the centre mark drill 150mm either side in roughly the middle of the leg with a 5mm drill bit. Continue to drill holes 300mm apart from these points in roughly the middle. Step 10: Start making the jig/template you’ll use for locating and drilling out the dowels. Lay out the short length of 50x50x3mm aluminium on the assembled unit’s top in the short side. Hold it flush to one end and mark the other so it is exactly the same length as the short side. Cut precisely on the mark with either a drop saw with an aluminium blade or a hacksaw with a nonferrous metal blade suitable for aluminium. Step 11: On the inside face of one leg of the aluminium angle, drill two holes, each 75mm in from either end of the angle exactly in the middle (Use a large fairly sharp nail and hammer and tap a small impression at the centre of where the hole should be to enable more precise drilling). Do the same process again on the other side but 50mm in from either end of the angle. When drilling the holes, use a drill bit that is the same diameter as the dowels. Make sure the angle is held firmly before drilling by using a vice or clamp the angle to a piece of waste timber that you can hold more firmly. TIP2: Being precise in cutting and drilling out the jig is important as you will use it on every unit and the holes need to match exactly otherwise the fitted dowels will not match to the holes in the adjoining units when assembling. Check your marks and measures several times to make sure this is correct before cutting or drilling out the jig! Step 12: Locating and drilling out the dowels. For the bottom two units you’ll need 4 holes for the dowels per unit on the top, for mid units you’ll need 4 holes on both the top and bottom of each unit and for the top unit you’ll need 4 holes in the bottom of the units. The holes will be drilled in the top and/or bottom edge of the side panel (those are the 789mm high pieces). Place the jig you’ve just made onto the top edge so the 50mm holes are facing up, hold firmly in place using an ezy-grip clamp if you have one other wise firm pressure and just drill a few millimetres into the unit, pop a dowel into the hole if not using a clamp to help keep it located. Now do exactly the same thing into the 75mm holes in the side but only to the panels that face the adjacent stack.  Remove the jig and finish drilling out the holes for the dowels blowing out the timber swarf. If you have a drill with a depth gauge set it so it is slightly deeper than half the length of a dowel, if you don’t, wrap masking tape around the drill bit at the same length so you have a depth guide. It’s important you don’t over-drill the holes (3-4mm too deep will be fine). Step 13: Hopefully you’ve worked all the kinks out in assembly and drilling by this point. So assemble and pre drill another unit exactly as you’ve just done. Step 14: Now you’re ready for the fun stuff. Place your first unit where you want it on the floor and tap in two dowels to the side panel that’ll face the second unit. Now place two washers over each of the dowels (if you want to have the negative detail) and present the second unit lining up the dowels to the holes. You may need to apply a bit of pressure to get the pieces to come together if the dowels and are a snug fit. If you have an ezy-grip clamp use this to draw the units firmly together. Step 15: Repeat the process of unit assembly making up as many as you like at this point, note though that the middle units will need holes drilled on the top and bottom. So drill out the top as per Step 12 including the side holes. Then on a towel, blanket or carpet, flip the unit end over end until the bottom is now presented for drilling, don’t worry about the side holes this time though. For the top unit, you’ll need the 50mm holes in the end of the side panels on the bottom and the 75mm holes in the side at the other end (at the top) only. Step 16: Now you’re ready for assembling the next pair of units. Place the dowels in the tops and of the already installed units. Remove the ezy-grip clamp if you’ve used it. Step 17: Look at the junction of the top and side panels; if your side panels extend a millimetre or two higher than the top panel only place 1 washer over each dowel, if they meet flush, place two. This should allow the gaps to match that of the already assembled units (but only if you want the negative detail). Step 18: Even though these units are made from hollow core construction they are still fairly heavy so you may want a little help to make it easy on yourself. So grab the helper and repeat Step 14. A bit of wiggling should make it all slip into place. Step 19: Repeat Steps 16 and 14, you’ll definitely need a helper this time, suggest you use sturdy chairs placed on something that doesn’t slip if you don’t have kitchen steps or a couple of step ladders with rubber feet. Step 20: Now we are ready to do the final and possibly the most important part and that is to secure the units to the wall at the top using the aluminium angle prepared at Step 8 and 9. Place the side with the 6mm holes at stud centre against the wall, line up the centre line drawn at step 3 with the one on the angle. Hold the angle down firmly and using a tek screw and the driver bit secure the first fixing to the wall. Now fix off the remainder of the angle to the wall keeping downward pressure when installing the fixings. Step 21: Make sure that your stacks are sitting tightly together, use the ezy-grip clamp if you have it, and in the right position on the floor. Using your spirit level, start at one end of the unit check for plumb then using the self-tapping 10g screws and the stubby screw driver (if you have limited space above the unit) screw in the first screw as close to the end of the unit as possible. Now go to the other end of the unit then the middle doing the same thing. When fixing the middle, make sure that the two units are sitting nice and flush together (they should be if the dowels are well executed) before fixing off. Now fix off the remainder of the aluminium. Step 22: Run over all the connecting nuts and give them a tweak and make sure they are tight, then place the white dots and…..YOU’RE DONE!!! GOOD JOB!!!!! Designing Tips for Kids Bedrooms

Kids bedrooms serve multiple purposes – playroom, study and sanctuary. However, the most important role of a kid’s bedroom is as a place for your child to sleep in comfort and safety at the end of the day. So designing a kid’s bedroom should be easy, right? That’s not always the case. Decorating a child’s bedroom is a difficult task for many parents. Just as your child is ready to graduate from their nursery to a big kid’s bedroom, you find yourself stuck. You’re unsure how to design a bedroom that reflects your child’s personality, while remaining functional not just now, but into the future as well. And don’t even get started on the budget, yet (when did kid’s furniture get so expensive?). Sound familiar? You’re not alone. However, when you know where to start and the best things to consider, a child’s bedroom is so much fun to design. Below you’ll find tips and tricks to help you save money, space and time, while designing a bedroom that your child will love and one that will serve them into the future. Rethink the intense theme So your child is mad about Paw Patrol™ and wants nothing more than Chase himself plastered on the walls? When designing a kid’s bedroom, it’s easy to get taken in by whimsical kids’ items. However, their cute-factor greatly exceeds their longevity or practicality, and once your child ages, you’re sure to find yourself reaching into your wallet once again for something less juvenile and more practical. So, save yourself the time and money. When buying these items for your kid’s bedroom, ensure they will last into the future – even to adolescence. Search for furniture you could see in your home for years. This means opting for classic styles with loads of versatile storage and instead of buying a child-sized dresser, choose one they’ll grow into. Bedroom furniture with modern white or woods have staying power. They’ll adapt to any style changes that happen within the room and will also suit your child at any age. This could simply mean choosing a desk with inbuilt storage and shelving or a bed with underbed storage. Not only do you have a space for your child to do their homework or sleep, but you also have extra storage to display books or tuck away the never-ending supply of toys. Speaking of kids’ beds, a bunk bed is always smart and are a major space-saver in any bedroom. A bunk bed allows you to use the same space twice and is perfect for siblings sharing a room or to prepare you for the inevitable sleepovers and visitors in the future. A Visit from the Royals

It’s not every year that New Zealand gets a very special visit from the royal family and what a visit it was! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George started their journey with a welcoming ceremony at Government House. They  then took Prince George to a play date with selected New Zealand parents and their babies from the Plunket nurse and parents' group. The Duke and Duchess then travelled to Blenheim on Thursday to lay a wreath at the war memorial before they visited the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre hosted by Sir Peter Jackson. Friday saw a competitive side to the royal couple where The Duke had met his match when The Duchess won a harbour yacht race on two former America’s Cup yachts.  Saturday saw the royal couple in Hamilton in the morning where The Duke paid a visit to the Pacific Aerospace and The Duchess visited Rainbow Place at the Children’s Hospital. They were then off to Cambridge in the afternoon where they were greeted by some of New Zealand’s favourite Athletes to officially open the new Avantidrome - National Cycling Centre. It was then off to Dunedin where they attended a service at The Octagon. They then moved on to visit Forsyth Barr Stadium where they were met by some team members from the All Blacks. The Duke and Duchess joined the coaching teams giving their teams a pep talk before the finals alongside All Blacks stars Richie McCaw and Aaron Smith. The Duke and Duchess moved onto the next leg of their journey where they were flown to Queenstown and were taken on a tour of Amisfield Winery in Queenstown before being taken on a Shotover Jet down the Otago River. The tour then took the royal couple back to Christchurch where they paid their respects to the 185 victims, the victims’ families and the survivors of the 2011 earth quake at the Canterbury Television Memorial Park. They then met the young cricketers ahead of the 2015 Cricket World Cup where The Duke and Duchess showcased their cricket skills to the public. The final day of the royals' visit was spent in Wellington where they visited the Royal New Zealand police college officially opened by Prince Charles just over 30 years ago. It was there where they paid their respects to the 29 Officers that have been killed in the course of their duties. Mocka have enjoyed having the royals visit New Zealand and have put together a collection of their British themed products in their honour.  It has been an eventful time for New Zealand and for the royals. A Fun Paper Snake

Getting your children to participate in craft activities is a great way to spark their imagination and encourage the development of their fine motor skills. For many stay at home children and children on holidays fun craft activities can break up the monotony of the day as it allows them to explore their creative side through creation and play. Participating in craft activities also helps to build children’s confidence and evokes a sense of accomplishment once completed. Paper craft activities are a fun and affordable way to get your kids interested in crafts. This paper snake craft activity is simple to make and is a fun activity that your children will love. What you need: Green and red coloured paper Sticky tape Scissors Craft eyes Pencil Steps: Step 1: Measure on a coloured piece of paper 50mm wide by 230mm long. Draw enough lines on the paper to cover the width. Step 2: Cut out the strips of paper that you have measured. Step 3: Pick up your first strip of paper and connect both of its ends together to form a cylinder shape. Place sticky tape on both the outside and inside of the overlapping ends of the paper. Step 4: Take another strip of paper and place one end though the paper cylinder that you previously made. Connect both ends of the paper strip to form another cylinder shape. Place sticky tape on both the outside and inside of the overlapping ends of the paper. Both cylinder shapes should be connecting, similar to a chain. Step 5: Repeat steps 1 to 4 until you have enough connecting cylinders that resemble a chain. You should have a least one end that has a connecting cylinder that sits vertical. Step 6: Glue two eyes onto the vertical cylinder at the end of the chain.  Cut out a snake tongue and glue it underneath the eyes. Wait for the glue to dry and you are finished.

A Designer Bedroom with Mocka

In October last year we introduced you to Michelle Halford from interior styling blog The Design Chaser and her style map that she developed for styling her son’s new bedroom and now we're pleased to show you the end result.  A style map is a type of collage that holds a collection of pictures, text and colour that designers use as guidance and to draw inspiration from when styling a room. Michelle’s style map included an array of furnishings and accessories in her chosen colour pallet. Her love for Scandinavian interior styling has exuded into her own home, drawing inspiration from colour and textures to style her home. Michelle’s interior style throughout her home portrays white walls, clean lines, light wood features and lots of space with hints of peach hues. Michelle opted for a monochrome design for her son’s room mixing the old with the new to create a fresh and contemporary space. Michelle has used a range of furnishings mixed with monochrome pictures, accessories and splashes of blue and yellow to style her son's bedroom. Amongst the images on Michelle’s style map it included Mocka’s 6 Cube Storage Unit with black doors and Mocka’s 2 Drawer Post Box in white and it's great to see them make it into the final room design. A Creative and Sweet Valentine’s Day Treat!

Valentine’s Day is a special day to celebrate with your loved ones and enjoy their presence and the joy they bring into your life. Make Valentine’s Day extra sweet this year with our creative and tasty treat. You and your children can have fun making these special Love Heart straws and then enjoy using them with your sweet Love Struck Potion drink. Love Heart Straws What you need: Paper or plastic straws in a print or colour of your choice. Glitter paper (available from craft stores or Kmart) Scissors Glue Pencil Clips Method: Step 1: Print or draw a heart shape on cardboard and cut it out. This will be used as your stencil to get symmetrical heart shapes. Step 2: Place on glitter paper and use a pencil to trace around the stencil shape. Step 3: Cut out the heart shape from the glitter paper. Repeat step 2 and 3 to get a second heart shape. Step 4: Place one heart shape on the table, glitter side facing down. Put glue on the back of the heart shape and place a straw down on the heart approximately a quarter from the top. Step 5: Glue the back side of the remaining heart and then match it up to the heart on the opposite side of the straw. Step 6: Use clips to hold in place until glue dries. Once the glue has dried you can remove the clips. All done! Now you are ready to use your heart straw. Love Struck Potion Drink What you need: Pink soda drink or an alternative is lemonade with a drop of pink food colouring Vanilla ice-cream A glass Method: Step 1: Place 1 scoop of ice-cream into your glass. Step 2: Half fill your glass with pink soda drink or your alternative drink. Watch it bubble away and enjoy drinking it through your heart straw. Happy Valentine’s Day!
