The Colour of Home | A Collection by Mocka

Life is full of colour and this season we present  The Colour of Home, a curated collection of new season product designed in Australia and inspired by joyful living, celebrating self expression through colour, texture, function and form.

Styling your home with colour requires balance and a bold approach so we sat down with Mocka’s Creative Lead, Kate Lewis and our colourful friends at  Kip and Co. Australian brand and colour icon, to discuss the biggest trends in colour this year and all the vibrant ways you can bring colour home.

Tip: Start With One Colour

When it comes to adding colour to your home, it’s essential to begin with hues that resonate with you. Your home is a personal sanctuary, and the colours within should reflect your unique style and personality. If your space currently features a neutral palette, Kate suggests experimenting with various shades of a single colour to maintain a cohesive yet dynamic look.

“I would start by considering what colours you enjoy,” says Kate. “Your home should be a reflection of you and your style. If you are starting from a neutral palette, I would explore shades of one colour to create colour in a safe, cohesive way. You can layer with soft decor in various shades of the one colour or, if you are looking for a statement in your room, use a solid colour piece of furniture. You can always start small with a pop of colour in a  side table, cushions, and art. These items are small and affordable to experiment with.”

Start With A Bedroom

Bedrooms are ideal for experimenting with bold colours. These personal sanctuaries can benefit from the vibrancy and depth that colour brings. From bedding and cushions to wallpaper and furniture, the bedroom offers numerous opportunities to play with colour and texture.

“Bedrooms are the perfect place to start!” Kate enthuses. “These are rooms just for you that you can experiment with and enjoy the vibrancy and play of colour. Bedrooms have so many layers and textures and ways to add depth and create colour through decor, textiles, wallpaper, furniture, and paint! Kids’ rooms and nurseries are perfect to let your inner child and imagination run wild. The home office is also a great space to be bold and creative for a fun, productive space!”

Kip & Co adds “Choosing colourful bedding that resonates with your personal aesthetic and preferences, will allow you to transform your bedroom into a rejuvenating haven that promotes better sleep and energises your overall well-being!”

“Colours like blues and greens can promote a sense of calm and relaxation, which is beneficial for winding down before sleep. On the other hand, warmer tones like oranges and yellows can evoke feelings of warmth and comfort, making your bedroom a cosy retreat!”

Blending Colours and Patterns

For those looking to break all the rules and joyfully mix patterns and colours, both Kate and the Kip & Co team have some encouraging words.

“Colour clashing is all about joyfully breaking all the rules, celebrating colour, and creating a home that is an expression of you,” Kate says. “Mixing and matching patterns, colour, fabrics, and textures bring life and personality to your space. Play with all of these elements for a colourfully cohesive look that adds depth and warmth to your home.”

“We’re big believers in print clashing,” adds Kip & Co. “So we say go BOLD or go home! Don't be afraid to mix and match – experiment with mixing checks and stripes, large and small florals, and any other combinations that might seem unconventional. There is no right or wrong! Don’t be shy to introduce some floral pillowcases or striped Euros to your current bedding setup. Otherwise, keep your linen plain and add the finishing touch with prints or bold coloured throws and cushions!

A trick for first-timers who aren’t used to breaking the rules is to pick one colour and explore mixing and matching similar shades within it. For example, cool tones – consider lighter shades of blue anchored with a royal blue and dark navy.”

Cost-Effective Colourful Changes

Adding colour to your home doesn't have to break the bank. Here are some budget-friendly ideas from Kate to help you live more colourfully:

  • Use decor and soft items like throw cushions and ottomans, these items are more affordable and interchangeable with trends.
  • Upcycle an old piece of furniture with a new coat of paint
  • Update a room with a feature wall or half wall of colour
  • A statement bedside table or side table in a solid colour will bring a pop of colour to your home without breaking the budget
  • Thrift shop for second hand objects with personality and shop digital art for an affordable pop of colour to suit your style.

Final Thoughts

Transforming your home with colour is an exciting journey of self-expression and creativity. Start with colours that make you happy, experiment with different shades and textures, and don’t be afraid to be bold. Remember, your home is a canvas – have fun painting it with the colours of your life.

We hope these tips inspire you to bring the joy and vibrancy of colour into your home.
